$100mil budget disclosed. Recouped $133mil.
That's the budget for production, and many accountants hide those numbers so only they and the executives know the true numbers. That's why a lot of films make $50mil+ but still don't get sequels, as they actually lost money.
Now, Power Rangers also had a lot of money sunk in by Krispy Kreme. The true number is up in the air, but judging by the fact they inserted their brand as a fucking plot point and made licensed donuts worldwide (I saw them in 3 countries myself), we can assume they spent a fair amount of cash.
Let's be nice and assume they spent 20% of the film's budget, which is $20mil. The film now had $120mil behind it.
And then we give it another fair whack of money, say another $20mil for advertising costs.
That's $7mil lost. However, my numbers are actually incredibly small. Kirspy Kreme spent much more than that, and rumours are between $50 and $100mil.
Advertising costs a lot more than that. I saw Power Rangers being shilled harder in my not-US country than Ghostbusters remake was, and the hype for it was huge. Ghostbusters cost $100mil for advertising, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say these guys had at least $250mil behind this.
And after all of that, the prior actors from MMPR got upset with it. Green, Red and Pink were okay with it, but one of them got ejected from the theatre because he was happy about his cameo, the Red one looked pretty bored during press releases and the Pink one just flaunted off how cute she was the entire time.Post too long.
